BEST ZOMBIE SPIRIT

It was a no-brainer decision to award the trophy for BEST ZOMBIE SPIRIT to the folks most of us called "that adorable family" - Jacob, Malcolm, and Joylyn brought incredible energy and enthusiasm and did it as a family and we just all wanted to hug them and EAT THEIR ADORABLE BRAINS!

What to expect at registration

A few tips for the big day!
On the day, we will be checking everyone in - zombies will need to have a photo ID, a registration form, and sign a sign-in sheet. Dancers of all ages will need an ID and a signed registration form.
Dancers under 18 years old will also need an ID, and a registration form signed by a consenting adult.

To speed the registration process up, and to have your name pre-printed on the sign-in sheet, we need your registration form by 4pm on Friday, 10/23. You can still bring it on the day, but please let us know at least your full name by Friday at 4pm, so we can have you on the list.

Ways to get us that form before Friday 10/23 at 4pm:

bring it to Sunday rehearsal or Wednesday rehearsal. FRIDAY REHEARSAL IS TOO LATE.

By 5pm on Saturday, everyone needs to be completely checked in so we can spend that last bit of time preparing for Thrill Time. If you get there by 4pm, you should have plenty of time to get registered, get a piece of pizza, and touch up your zombie look.

Did I say pizza? YES. Thank you for Papa Johns for donating pizza on the day!!!! You will get a ticket when you register so no non-zombies eat your well-deserved pizza.

Tightening Dance Moves

Hey guys! You are all doing so well! Saturday's combined rehearsal was really exciting!

Below are just some dance pointers to clean up the dance before the big day. Keep practicing; this is going to be awesome!

1) Throughout the dance, be aware of your surroundings, and take smaller steps forward/backwards, particularly the "Swim Together", "Wuzz Up", and "Stomp(s)". We will have to work in the space provided.... of course, you can use those moves to adjust your spacing, too!

2) After "grab, pull in, punch punch punch down" section, people are getting up early instead of "hold, hold". You should wait two counts before "right left".

Also in that section, it is easier to keep the head down until "right left"; then bring it up and look forward.

3) During ALL stomp parts, we need to keep our heads down regardless of how low they can get. It looks great when we're all in sync!

4) After "Star down", we want to make sure we rise at the same time!

5) Wuzz Up section--arms are meant to be "disconnected" at the shoulders as dancers travel instead of held in place--much like "shake-a-and-a-uppa" part disconnect earlier. Don't be afraid to be loose with them!

6) Remember we do the "Hip and Roar" section twice which seems to come as a surprise to many when the chorus is reprised near the end after our last "star down hold 2-3-4 rise"

7) While styling is fun to watch--reminder to all we have to follow the choreography to be counted as part of the record. Add stuff at the encore performance :-) It looks amazing when our heads, hands, and feet are together!

8) We've said it often, but no smiling as zombies! Work on your character; it really stands out during moves like "Zombie march", "Wuzz Up", and "Pose"! Also No Talking (that's a given)!

9) Big hint for dance shoes at Thrill time at the Bay--regular sneakers on the sand we sprinkle on the concrete is hands down your optimum dance option if it works with the costume.

10) REMINDER: Call time is 3:30pm..... We will rehearse a couple of times, work on spacing, finish any admin work, touch up our hair/make-up, and DANCE promptly at 5:30pm!!!

We are having a MASS RUN THROUGH this Saturday, Oct. 17, at 4:30 pm at Alliant International University (see address in postings below). This is after the North County and North Park rehearsals are over so hopefully most everyone can be there and we can get a sense of how many people we have.

On the performance day we will NOT be running the dance with the prompts, so do try and internalize those "right hip right hip right hip in out" instructions because we are performing to the radio single.
The Saturday run through will be once with the full-speed prompts and once or more without.

Zombification Inspiration

I have just posted some pictures of makeup simple and advanced, and some costume ideas, and photos of people having fun dressed as zombies. I hope this will inspire you!
You can see how just a little shadowing and blood can go a long way - Rite Aid has some cheap makeup in black and white and green and red, and cheap stage blood, which can take you a long way.
Also:
baby powder on the hair makes it look lifeless and dirty
cocoa powder on the skin makes it look dirty like you crawled out of your grave
If you want to be a bloody zombie (my personal favorite but not technically in keeping with the Thriller aesthetic) the stage blood that tastes like peppermint is the least noxious to have on your person, but mostly looks fresh. the cheap stuff looks thick, and a little chocolate sauce looks like old gross blood.

You will smell and taste like a chocolate mint baby sundae but you will look FABULOUS!

The Thrill is On!

We're still looking to swell our numbers and beat the California record from last year - and we can do it!

It's not too late to learn the dance - we still have beginning classes on Wednesdays (two more before the event) and intermediate classes on Saturdays (two more before the event)!

Keep practicing at home, tell a friend, teach it to them, and come on out for rehearsals!

Start listening to the song without the prompts, and learn to do it without Ines - Saturday rehearsals are doing it, and it feels awesome.

We will have a MASS RUN-THROUGH after the Saturday, October 17th rehearsal. Because there won't be room at Vernetta's or the North County studios, we're going to do it on the Scripps Ranch lawn where we have Sunday rehearsals.

Since Saturday's North Park rehearsal wraps up by 4 or so, we'll be there at 4:30, and we can see just how many people we are. Even if you can't come to a full rehearsal, come out to Alliant International University on Saturday, 10/17 at 4:30, and let's do a run-through together! Out in the open, where we have room and no furniture or pillars or walls, we can REALLY ZOMBIE IT UP! This run-through can also operate as a flash mob for the campus denizens.

Keep your eye on this space, as we will be posting inspirational zombie pictures for you all to start thinking about your costumes and makeup.

The blog entry below for 9/27 has been updated with Sunday rehearsal information. This rehearsal is outdoors on turf (like how we will be doing it on the day) and also "low tech" - it's for working on sections and details and just drilling as attendees need. BYO water but there are bathrooms nearby. Sunday times are 2-3:30 but we can go later if needed. Parking is next to and just past the area of rehearsing.
If you beat me there, I am centering the meeting spot at the flagpole.

Hey Everyone! What are you doing Saturday, October 24th at 5:30pm (pt)?

Join us for 'Thrill The World' 2009 - a worldwide attempt to hold the World Record for the Largest Simultaneous Dance of Michael Jackson’s Thriller!

You've seen it on Youtube, and now you can be a part of history! We will dress up in zombie gear and bust out the moves in a public place (to be announced) come Thrill The World performance day. It doesn't matter if you are a "dancer".... This is an amazing time to pay tribute to the legendary performer and creative artist- a tribute beyond tributes- and a way to fuse the community of San Diego together, ultimately forming dance/music harmony around the globe.

THE GOAL around the world: 270,000 participants to break a Guinness World Record. In October 2008, Thrill the World set a new world record with the Record Holders Republic, with 4,179 people from 10 nations simultaneously performing the Thriller dance.

Thousands of people in over 100 cities, on 6 continents, learn the Thriller dance, and perform it at the same time.

We want San Diego to be a big success this year.... and we want you all involved!

Ways get started and get involved:

1) Reserve Sat. 10/24 @ 5:30pm on your calendar (actually plan on being at the venue an hour before for rehearsal)!

2) Spread the word.... to your friends and family; anyone can be involved as long as they register (prior to or on the performance date). I will send details soon.

3) Follow this blog! Post the link!

4) Watch Michael Jackson's Thriller, and get familiar with the moves and incredible tune. If you've learned the dance before, just know, it will be a bit varied (see #4).

We've seen a lot of different zombies in the movies and elsewhere: The zombies in the Thriller video tend to be risen from the grave, dry, and rotting. The zombies in the Dawn of the Dead remake are fast-running, blood spewers. All zombies are welcome, but obviously you want to take different approaches depending on how it is that you came to shamble amongst the undead.

Risen zombies: dark, sunken eyes, grey, even scaly skin, dusty hair, very little red, either in the eyes or the lips. Dirt under the nails from clawing your way out of your grave. Pale, dusty, dry, creaky are the watchwords.

Bitten zombies: vital, bloody, injured, with bite marks or blood pooling/bruising, rolling eyes, oily, matted hair. Moist, contagious, bloody, and hungry for brains describe this group.

Me, I like both, and sometimes combine elements (dusty hair, bloody mouth). Clothes: damaged, tattered, torn, bloody, blackened, filthy, gauzy...just so long as you can do the moves!

Bonus zombies: Of course, MJ turns into a werewolf in the movie that he and his date are watching before turning into a dancing zombie, so really the sky is the limit. We just want to see your bright and scary faces glowering terrifyingly on the day!
